The DropShip shuddered as it blasted its way into the atmosphere. Sander Lund felt the force of the entry through his BattleMech’s command chair, and readjusted his position to account for the gravity that began weighing him down. His primary viewscreen indicated the DropShip was four minutes from touching down.

The rest of Sander’s command lance showed green lights for readiness. Whatever awaited them on the surface of Alleghe, they were as prepared as they could be. They had received no communication from the planet’s surface since jumping into the system three days ago, and Sander had ordered a heavy burn in order to get to the planet as quickly as possible.

Brought into the situation at the behest of the planetary governor, Sho-sa Sander Lund had collected his command lance and departed, leaving his XO in charge of the unit until his return. The message from higher up the command chain was that they wanted a native of Alleghe to look into whatever had happened there. When he asked why him, Sander was told something about some ministry he had never heard of, which was all about promoting nationalism and propping up natives of certain worlds. Sander did not care about any of that right now. The only thing he cared about discovering at this point was why no one on Alleghe was communicating with them. The Lyran raid that happened over a month ago had not knocked out the planet’s ability to communicate, otherwise no call for help could have been received.

Also, the Lyran raiders had not captured the planet for use as a staging area for a larger scale operation, as was initially feared. Sander remained unconvinced that the Lyrans had nothing to do with the current communication silence, but as of last report, the raiders had left the planet after the militia fought them to a standstill near the governor’s estate, in the heart of Corraine City. That was what the report said, anyway. And now Sander was being called in to investigate just how the militia commander had managed to fight off an entire company of Lyran BattleMechs with just over a company’s worth of conventional forces, the heaviest of which were three ancient tanks dating back to sometime around the start of the Second Succession War.

Sander did not like mysteries like this. There was too much room for misinterpretation and assumption when dealing with unknowns like those he and his lance were falling straight toward at that moment.

Two minutes until planetfall. He rechecked his Dragon’s systems, confirming they were all fully operational. When he ordered the DropShip to make the drop as if under fire, his lance at the ready to storm out of the hangar into unknown conditions, he stopped one degree shy of treating the situation as a full combat drop. Sander’s main priority was the safety of the civilian population in the city.

“Sho-sa.” It was the voice of the DropShip captain.
